A few simple guidelines with help you look your best for your portraits:

Tips for School Pictures

The goal of portraits is to focus attention on the subject’s face, so try to avoid things that can distract from that primary focus.

  • Choose solid colors or simple patterns. Busy patterns and plaids can be distracting.
  • Medium to dark colors are good for creating a enduring portrait
  • Shirts with text or slogans do not always photograph well, and often the text can be cropped out.
  • Long-sleeved shirts are better because the arms distract attention from the face in a portrait. Avoid tank top and halter top shirts and dresses.
  • Choose accessories that do not over-power the portrait. Small earrings, necklaces, and bracelets are best.
  • Pay attention to casual items you routinely wear, but may not want to be photographed. For example, sometimes girls keep pony-tail holders on their wrists or other everyday bracelets that are easily forgotten.

Tips for Senior Portraits

Many of the above tips apply for senior portraits. Additionally, consider the following:

Bring a few outfits (formal and casual) that represent you – Again we recommend selecting solid colors and long sleeves. (We will usually do an indoor session, and we have air conditioning. So just because it is summer, don’t automatically think you must wear short sleeves).

Remember to complete your outfits with accessories, shoes, and socks that match. We photograph full body portraits as well as close ups.

Make you senior portraits a personal reflection of who you are by bringing letter jackets, uniforms, sports equipment, and musical instruments to express your interests, making your portraits personal

For Girls:

  • Avoid drastic changes in hairstyle or color right before your portraits. Style your hair before your session. Choose a style you are comfortable with and know looks good.
  • Apply concealer and powder if necessary to minimize blemishes. No need to worry if a bump or blemish shows up on picture day. We can fix blemishes on your final order with portrait retouching.
  • Apply make-up before you arrive and bring product with you for touch-ups if necessary
  • Limit sun exposure before your session, avoiding burns or tan lines. Sun burns and tan lines are not always able to be corrected in final prints.
  • Paint your nails (clear or neutral colors work best)
  • Get a good night’s sleep

For Guys:

  • Clip your nails
  • Get your hair cut about a week before your session, rather than a day or two before.
  • Shave before your session
  • Watch out for getting too much sun prior to your portrait session avoiding burns or tan lines
  • Get a good night’s sleep
